Rocky Dennis is a sixteen-year-old boy suffering from a rare bone disease that has turned his face into a mask, somewhat resembling a lion’s and twice the size of a normal face. To make matters worse, this disease is incurable. But Rocky is one of those rare people who make the most of life no matter what. Rocky is smart and has a kind, huge heart; he isn’t bitter toward a world where, at first glance, he faces ridicule or disgust. He’s an excellent student and easily wins the friendship and respect of his classmates. He lives with his mother—Rasti, a hippie rocker, who is beautiful, wild, loving, a heavy drinker, and a drug abuser—and the rest of his family consists of his rocker brothers from a motorcycle gang, among whom stands out the charming, mustachioed heartthrob Gar, who may be his father.
