New York, 1945. At a jazz orchestra concert in a nightclub, Jimmy—who has just returned from the front—persistently but unsuccessfully tries to strike up a conversation with a girl named Francine. The next morning, they run into each other again in the hotel lobby, where she is looking for a friend and he is trying to get another extension on his bill. When the extension is denied, Jimmy makes a run for it, dragging Francine along with him into a taxi. During their conversation, it turns out that he’s a pretty good saxophonist. Almost against her will, she ends up attending yet another one of Jimmy’s auditions...
