Amarcord 1973
An elegant signora in red, the object of universal desire and admiration. She is the busty owner of a tobacco shop and reigns supreme in the fantasies of teenage boys. These and many other remarkable scenes bring the legendary master of cinema to mind, and come to life on screen, showing us the ethereal world of the past through the eyes of a fifteen-year-old coming of age. 'Amarcord', in the Romagnolo dialect of Fellini's hometown of Rimini, means 'I remember'. Set in the Italian countryside in the 1930s during Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship, this nostalgic film captures the essence of a bygone era. Hormones rage in the bodies of the teenagers. Family, church and friendship form the unshakable foundations of daily life for the townspeople. Giant portraits of the great 'Duce' hang in the streets. Sex is in the air. The life depicted in the local cinema is taken as the standard for real life.
