The ascetic Simeon has been living atop a pillar in the desert for six years, six weeks, and six days. He prays and heals the people who come to him. The wealthy family of one of those healed erected a taller pillar as a token of gratitude, and Simeon moved to it. Soon, Satan began to appear to him, trying to persuade Simeon to come down to earth.
