Satyajit Ray's “Apu Trilogy” has long been available on the website in restored 4K quality from The Criterion Collection.
The collection includes all three films:
  1. Pather Panchali AKA Song of the Little Road 4K 1955

Satyajit Ray's debut, which became an important event in world cinema. The film, in the style of neorealism, tells the story of a family in rural Bengal through the story of a boy named Apu and the women who raise him: his sisters Durga and Indira, his mother Sarbaja, and his aunt.

Filmed with poetic realism and awarded the Cannes Film Festival prize for “Best Humanistic Documentary,” the film immerses the viewer in the atmosphere of childhood discoveries and has a fundamental power of influence.

  2. Aparajito a.k.a. The Unvanquished 1956

    Download

The continuation of Apu's story after his family moves to Varanasi. The film shows the protagonist's coming of age: from child to student in Calcutta. The main focus is on his intellectual development and complex relationship with his mother.

The film won the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. It is a profound spiritual development of the story that began in The Song of the Road.

  3. Apur Sansar a.k.a. The World of Apu 4K 1959

    Download

The final part of the trilogy. Apu, now a 20-year-old graduate, dreams of a career as a writer. The film shows his unexpected marriage and difficult path to fatherhood.
The film marks the debut of Ray's regular actors, Sumitra Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore. The film demonstrates Ray's increased directorial skill and puts an emotional end to the story of Apu.
