Henri Charrière, a safecracker, is sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to hard labor for a murder he did not commit. Nicknamed the Moth because he has this symbol of thieves tattooed on his chest, Henri makes several escape attempts. As punishment, the authorities put him in a punishment cell for a long time, and then send him to French Guiana on Devil's Island, surrounded on all sides by the ocean. No prisoner has ever escaped from this most dreaded convict prison. But nothing can make Henri lose heart and break his determination to break free.
