Grand Illusion 1937

World War I. The plane flown by the French pilots Moréchal and Bolde is shot down by the German ace von Rauffenstein, but both pilots survive and are sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Several British officers are also held there, and the newcomers join forces with them to dig an escape tunnel. After the French victory on the Western Front, Moréchal, Boldier, and the other French prisoners of war are transferred to another prison, where their “old acquaintance,” von Raufenstein, has been appointed commandant. The commandant warmly welcomes the French, noting that escape from “his” prison is impossible...
